Joining Orienteering Events

Searching and Registering Events

Orienteering events in Hong Kong could be browsed in the following sites:
1) OAHK Fixture、2)”Orienteering Fever” Facebook Group、3)Websites of the Affiliated Clubs

Pre-Race Preparation

Event organiser usually announce the following documents one week before the event
Event Info:Event Centre、Rundown、Characteristics of Terrain and Rules etc.
Start List:Start time of each competitor, class and start number

Competitors can prepare the following equipment in advance: 1) compass, 2) electronic control card (some competitions require participants bringing their own card), 3) whistle (compulsory for rural evens) ,4) sports suits and shoes

Event Centre

Participants can store their baggage, claim number bibs or electronic control card (if rented) in the event centre.
Announcement would also be made in the event centre if any update on event info is made.

Start Area

Please check the following equipment before heading to start area: 1) compass, 2) number bib, 3) electronic control card, & 4) whistle (compulsory for rural races).
Most of the cross-country race adopts interval start, where orienteers from the same class would start with an interval (e.g. 1 or 2 minute depending on the race). While most relay or score races would adopt mass start, i.e. all orienteers from same class start simultaneously.
Map would be distributed to orienteers in the start area. In some races, orienteers have to follow the taped route to start marker (which is the triangle on the map) and begin their navigation.

Competition Area

With the use of compass, map and orienteering techniques, orienteers have to visit the control in predetermined sequence. Control would be precisely located in the terrain with an orange-white marker. Orienteers have to punch their control card on the unit (mounted on the marker) for confirmation.

Finish

Orienteers have to punch on the finish control unit and cross the finish line to complete the course.

Result Processing

Please proceed to the resulting processing counter to download the result immediately after finish. Individual result slip would be given to competitor while group result would be updated at certain time interval. Some races offer online result display.

Prize Presentation

Cross country: The orienteer with the shortest time finishing the course wins
Score: The orienteer with the highest score within time-limit wins
Relay: The team with the shortest total time wins

Most orienteering competitions in Hong Kong award prizes to top 3 orienteers from each class.
